Accountability
Definition- In this case, this is a president's willingness to take responsibility for his or her actions. This means that the president doesn't blame others for his or her mistakes but owns them and accepts the consequences. Similarly, the president also has a responsibility to hold the people accountable for their decisions as the people of the nation. This means that the president shouldn't take blame for the poor decision made by the people when it comes to voting on state issues and officials.
Barack Obama- President Obama has showed accountability throughout his presidency. Obama has showed accountability by not shying away from the consequences of his actions such as when he makes decisions that are unpopular with the people and is then ridiculed by the media. Obama knows that not all of his decisions are going to be popular with the people but that he must stand by and take responsibility for his actions. Obama also recognizes that the people must be held accountable for their decisions in order to make sure that the people just like himself are kept in check. With the people holding Obama in check and Obama holding the people in check this allows for each of them to have to hold themselves more accountable for their actions and decisions.
Woodrow Wilson- President Wilson was one of America's most accountable presidents. Wilson showed accountability by sticking by his agendas and his beliefs even when they were unpopular. An example of this was when he pushed for America to join the League of Nations but Congress wouldn't have anything to do with it even though Wilson was willing to be the one held accountable for the decision to join. Wilson was willing to accept the consequences of his decisions on many occasions such as when he began his presidency and pushed for a progressive legislative agenda which would be opposed by many members of Congress. Wilson also held he people accountable for their decisions when he had to step in and avert an economic crisis and a railroad workers strike. Throughout his presidency Wilson was forced to challenge his own accountability and the accountability of the people.
Herbert Hoover- Hoover was just as accountable or even more accountable than the two previously described presidents. Throughout Hoover's political career Hoover's accountability was tested many times such as when he was the head of the U.S. Food Administration during WW I. Hoover would once again show his capacity for accountability while he was president when he attempted to bring the nation out of the Great Depression. Hoover was unable to rescue the nation from the grip of the Great Depression but because of his capacity for accountability he accepted the consequences of his actions and kept trying to get the nation out of the Great Depression. Hoover was never able to rescue America from the Great Depression but he did accept responsibility for the Depression and accepted the fact that the people blamed him for the Depression. Hoover was one of the most accountable men to ever lead the American people.
Abraham Lincoln- Throughout his presidency Lincoln should great accountability. Lincoln was able to show accountability by taking responsibility for the duration of the war and for the war taking so many lives. Lincoln showed a great level of accountability when he was opposed by members of the other political party and took responsibility for his actions. Lincoln didn't shy away from taking responsibility instead he encouraged people to hold him accountable so that he could better himself as the president of the nation. By being so accountable, Lincoln was able to gain the trust of the nation as well as Congress which would help him in his quest to pass multiple legislation. The most notable legislation that Lincoln was able to see get passed was the 13th Amendment which truly tested Lincoln's accountability as the passing of this Amendment would bring about many new challenges for the nation. Lincoln was one of the most accountable president's ever.
